The Great Bend in the Saar

The Obverse depicts the Saarschleife, the bend in the Saar River, surrounded by hills; along the river, groups of trees represent the wooded landscape that envelops the picturesque Saarschleife. Superimposed on the design are: at the bottom, the inscription representing the German Land to which the coin refers, i.e. “SAARLAND,” with the sign “D” below it, identifying Germany, and the minting year next to it; at the top right, the mintmark, which may relate to one of the following five mints:
- A - Berlin
- D - Munich
- F - Stuttgart
- G - Karlsruhe
- J - Hamburg
finally, also at the top left, the personal mark of the author. On the outer part are the 12 five-pointed stars, symbol of the European Union. The coin's Reverse is the new common side of Euro coins, with the face value "2" on the left and the European continent on the right, overlapped by the inscription "EURO". Six vertical lines with a star at each end are placed behind the Europe's image.

35 years of German unity

The Obverse features two inscriptions, each consisting of four lines: on the left, “WIR SIND EIN VOLK” (“We are one people”), and on the right, “35 JAHRE DEUTSCHE EINHEIT” (“35 years of German unity”). The two inscriptions are slightly flared along the vertical axis and bordered at the top and bottom by horizontal lines; furthermore, the letter “D” in the words ‘SIND’ and “DEUTSCHE” is written in a larger font and connects the two inscriptions. The flaring of the two inscriptions is intended to evoke the division of Germany in the past, while the shared “D” is meant to represent the reunification of the peoples of what were once East and West Germany. At the top of the coin, adjacent to the inner edge, are the author’s initials “TS” with the mintmark below, which may relate to one of the following five mints:
- A - Berlin
- D - Munich
- F - Stuttgart
- G - Karlsruhe
- J - Hamburg
