Coins of Bulgaria
Bulgaria regained full state sovereignty at the end of the 19th century, after centuries of Ottoman rule, and introduced its national currency, the Bulgarian Lev, in 1881, divided into 100 stotinki. During the 20th century the Lev underwent several reforms and revaluations due to economic instability and political changes within the country, particularly after the Second World War and during the period of Soviet influence. Following the end of the socialist regime, in the early 1990s Bulgaria began a deep restructuring of its monetary system, culminating in the redenomination of the Lev in 1999 at a rate of 1000:1 compared to the previous issue.
In 2026 the country officially adopted the Euro and began minting its national coins in the common currency, becoming the 25th country to use it. Bulgarian issues are produced by the Sofia Mint, which is responsible for both circulation and commemorative coinage.
