750th anniversary of the death of St. Thomas Aquinas

On the Obverse, in the foreground, Saint Thomas Aquinas is depicted wearing the vestment of the Dominican order to which he belonged; in his left hand, the Saint holds a volume of his most important work, the "Summa Theologiae", while in his right hand he holds a pen. A radiant sun, symbolizing his immense wisdom, is engraved on the Saint's chest. Among the various titles attributed to him, the best known is “Doctor Angelicus,” intended to praise his extraordinary purity of body and spirit. At the bottom of the coin, below the image of the Saint, in fact are the inscriptions “DOCTOR ANGELICUS” and “THOMAS AQUINAS,” placed one below the other. The design is completed by a lily (symbol of chastity) on the left, behind the image of the Saint, and the Church of St. Thomas in Roccasecca (the first religious building in the world erected in honor of St. Thomas Aquinas), depicted on the left in the background. The upper part features the circular inscription “CITTA' DEL VATICANO”, while the years “1274” on the left and "2024" on the right are shown on both sides of the design. Below the minting year is the mintmark “R”, with the name of the designer “A. CICCONI” underneath, positioned along the inner edge. On the left, between the edge and the image of the church, is the engraver's initials “AV. INC.”.On the outside part are placed 12 five-pointed stars, the symbol of the European Union. The coin's Reverse is the new common side of Euro coins, with the face value "2" on the left and the European continent on the right, overlapped by the inscription "EURO". Six vertical lines with a star at each end are placed behind the Europe's image.
Edge: finely milled, with six "2" in incuse (repeated alternately from bottom to top and vice versa) and twelve five-pointed stars.

The Obverse features portraits of Guglielmo Marconi in the center, Pope Pius XI on the right, and the future Pope Pius XII on the left; a radio wave is also depicted below the three effigies. The upper part of the coin features the circular inscription “GUGLIELMO MARCONI” above the years "1874" and “2024.” On the left, in the space between the edge and the image of Pope Pius XII, is the mintmark “R.” At the bottom is the arched inscription “•CITTA' DEL VATICANO•”, followed on the right by the name of the designer “L. PANCOTTO” and the engraver's initials “A.M. INC.”, written one below the other and adjacent to the inner edge. On the outside part are placed 12 five-pointed stars, the symbol of the European Union.
