On the Obverse we find in the centre the portrait of John Paul II, facing to the left. Below the portrait are the mintmark and the minting year. On the outer part is the circular inscription "CITTA' DEL VATICANO", enclosed between the 12 five-pointed stars, symbol of the European Union (six on the right and six on the left). To the bottom right, below the stars, the inscription "GV - UP INC." indicating the sculptor and engraver of the coin. The coin's Reverse is the common side of Euro coins, with the face value "5 EURO CENT" and the image of Europe's place in the world. Six diagonal lines with a star at each end are placed behind the globe.

On the outside, at the bottom, the inscription "CITTA' DEL VATICANO", at the top the 12 stars of the European Union.
