On the Obverse we find in the centre the portrait of John Paul II, facing to the left. Below the portrait are the mintmark and the minting year. On the outer part, on the left, is the circular inscription "CITTA' DEL VATICANO", enclosed between the 12 five-pointed stars, symbol of the European Union. To the bottom right, below the stars, the inscription "GV - UP INC." indicating the sculptor and engraver of the coin. The coin's Reverse is the old common side of Euro coins, with the face value "50 EURO CENT" on the center-right part and the European Union (before its enlargement) on the left. Six vertical lines with a star at each end are placed behind the Europe's image.
