Elections and Democracy

The Obverse depicts eight stylized ballot papers, composed of circles and rectangles; the ballot papers overlap and intersect with each other, giving rise to other smaller geometric shapes. On the left, towards the top, is the circular inscription “VAL ♦ DEMOKRATI,” while from the bottom to the right (mirroring the other inscription) is the arched inscription “VAALIT ♦ DEMOKRATIA” (‘ELECTIONS’ - “DEMOCRACY” in Swedish and Finnish, respectively). Also on the right, between the design and the inscription, is the initials “FI” (identifying Finland), with the mintmark below. At the bottom, again between the image and the inscription, is the minting year. On the outer part 12 five-pointed stars, symbol of the European Union. The coin's Reverse is the new common side of Euro coins, with the face value '2' on the left and the European continent on the right, overlapped by the inscription 'EURO'. Six vertical lines with a star at each end are placed behind the Europe's image.
Edge: finely milled, with the inscription "SUOMI FINLAND" in incuse followed by three lion heads.

Finnish Architecture

The Obverse depicts the silhouettes of four buildings, with the spires of each building pointing towards the center of the coin. Diagonally, between the representations of the buildings, are the inscriptions “GESELLIUS,” “LINDGREN,” ‘SAARINEN’ and, together, the initials “FI” (identifying Finland), the mintmark and the minting year, forming an additional inscription. The three surnames belong to three famous Finnish architects: Herman Gesellius, Armas Lindgren, and Eliel Saarinen. On the outer part 12 five-pointed stars, symbol of the European Union.
