Varaždin (the Old Town of Varaždin) - First of the Croatian Cities series

The Obverse depicts Varaždin Castle (12th–16th century); the castle has changed its appearance over the centuries, from a medieval fortress to a Renaissance castle. Today, the building is known as the Old Town and is the most important historical building in the city of Varaždin, as well as a monument of great value to Croatia's architectural heritage. The upper part of the coin features the circular inscription “STARI GRAD VARAŽDIN” (“Old Town of Varaždin”), while the lower part shows the arched inscription “HRVATSKA” (Croatia), followed by the minting year on the right. On the outside part are placed 12 five-pointed stars, representing the European Union. The coin's Reverse is the new common side of Euro coins, with the face value "2" on the left and the European continent on the right, overlapped by the inscription "EURO". Six vertical lines with a star at each end are placed behind the Europe's image.
Edge: finely milled, with the inscription in italics "O LIJEPA O DRAGA O SLATKA SLOBODO" (O beautiful, O dear, O sweet freedom).

Marko Marulić

The Obverse features a portrait of Marko Marulić, a Croatian writer (born in Split in 1450), facing right. He was a prominent representative of European Christian Humanism and of chivalric poetry in Renaissance literature. On the right side of the coin, adjacent to the inner edge, is the circular inscription “MARKO MARULIĆ,” while on the left, towards the bottom, is the code “HR” (identifying Croatia). At the bottom, between the effigy and the edge, is the minting year.
