1st type: years 2002-2007

The Obverse depicts Saint Marinus, an image inspired by a painting of the School of Guercino (17th century). On the right, the minting year and the mintmark "R", on the left, in an arc, the inscription "SAN MARINO", preceded by the author's initials. On the outside part are placed 12 five-pointed stars, representing the European Union, with the engraver's signature at the bottom between two stars. The coin's Reverse is the old common side of Euro coins, with the face value "20 EURO CENT" on the center-right part and the European Union (before its enlargement) on the left. Six vertical lines with a star at each end are placed behind the Europe's image.
Edge: Spanish flower shape (smooth with 7 indentations)
Diameter: 22,25 mm

The Obverse depicts the three Towers of the Republic of San Marino (from the left, Montale, Cesta and Guaita). In the upper part of the coin is the circular inscription "SAN MARINO", followed by the minting year. Positioned between the inscription and the image is the mintmark "R". In the lower part, on the edge of the design, is the engraver's initials "MOMONI MOD." written in an arc, followed by the author's initials "AL". On the outside part are placed 12 five-pointed stars, representing the European Union. The coin's Reverse is the new common side of Euro coins, with the face value "20 EURO CENT" on the center-right part and the European continent on the left. Six vertical lines with a star at each end are placed behind the Europe's image.
