2 Euro Commemorative coins Portugal 2024
50th anniversary of Revolution of the Carnations on 25 April 1974

On the Obverse, in the center of the coin, there is a carnation, the emblem of the revolution, surrounded by a series of eccentric circles: the design formed by the numerous circles signifies that the actions and certainties of a people may change over the years, but they remain faithful to the principles of the revolution. April 25, 1974, is the date on which democracy was established in Portugal following the events of the popular revolution. On the right, between the inner edge and the design, there are two circular inscriptions: the outer one features the verse “Esta é a madrugada que eu esperava” (“This is the dawn I was waiting for”), while the one on the inside shows the name of the poem from which the verse is taken, “O Nome das Coisas”, followed by the name of the author of the poem, the Portuguese poet "Sophia de Mello Breyner Andresen". Continuing along the edge, from bottom to top, are the following arched inscriptions: “PORTUGAL” (preceded by the national coat of arms), “25.04.1974_2024” and finally, in smaller letters, the name of the author and the Portuguese mint “HENRIQUE CAYATTE” and “CASA DA MOEDA” . On the outside part are placed 12 five-pointed stars, representing the European Union. The coin's Reverse is the new common side of Euro coins, with the face value "2" on the left and the European continent on the right, overlapped by the inscription "EURO". Six vertical lines with a star at each end are placed behind the Europe's image.

Portugal's participation in the Paris 2024 Olympic Games

The Obverse, in the center of the coin, depicts a design consisting of a series of elements arranged in the shape of a heart, surrounded by 15 circles representing the Olympic rings and the continents they represent; the coat of arms of Portugal is placed at the tip of the heart. At the bottom, adjacent to the inner edge, is the circular inscription “EQUIPA OLÍMPICA PORTUGAL.” Also along the inner edge, written in an arc, is the minting year followed by the name of the author, “RITA MARGARIDA,” on the right, and the name of the Portuguese mint, “CASA DA MOEDA,” on the left. On the outside part are placed 12 five-pointed stars, representing the European Union. The coin's Reverse is the new common side of Euro coins, with the face value "2" on the left and the European continent on the right, overlapped by the inscription "EURO".
