1st type: Prince Rainier, years 2001-2005

On the Obverse we find in the centre the portrait of Prince Rainier III, superimposed on that of Hereditary Prince Albert, while on the outside part are placed at the top the inscription "MONACO", at the bottom the minting year enclosed between the mintmark and the mintmaster's mark, to the right and to the left the 12 five-pointed stars, symbol of the European Union (six on each side). The coin's Reverse is the old common side of Euro coins, with the face value "1" on the left and the European Union (before its enlargement) on the right, overlapped by the inscription "EURO". Six vertical lines with a star at each end are placed behind the Europe's image.

On the right side of the coin, in the background, is the coat of arms of the Principality, while at the bottom, superimposed on the design, are the mintmark and the mark of the mint director. On the outside part are placed 12 five-pointed stars, representing the European Union.
